The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
