Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
