Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
